ROWING THE BOAT TO 4TH GRADE!
In my 3rd Grade classroom I like to make learning exciting and enjoyable for my students. In my lessons, I use a hands-on, collaborative approach in order to help students build off of their prior knowledge and to help them explore our topics in depth. 3rd Grade is a very important year for developing and strengthening skills in language arts and math. Our language arts curriculum is closely aligned to the Common Core standards, and encompasses reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary. To strengthen reading comprehension, we practice close reading techniques with a variety of genres, including literature and informational texts. Students learn to identify various literary techniques such as author’s purpose, cause and effect, etc. in their reading, and they practice integrating these same techniques into their own writing. We also focus on developing and strengthening skills in grammar and vocabulary.
Our Envision Math curriculum is also based on the Common Core standards, and helps students develop a strong foundation in mathematical thinking and problem solving skills, geometry, measurements and data, algebraic expressions, etc. Our science and social studies curricula are based on Common Core and CA State Standards as well. In social studies, we cover a variety of topics such as mapping skills, community and governmental organization and function, history of our local area, and Native American history. Our science curriculum focuses on topics in physical science, life science, and earth science. Throughout the year, we do a variety of hands-on activities and labs, and we have the opportunity to use our school’s Science Lab for our experiments. Students also attend religion class each day. Our religion program strives to help our students develop an understanding of the Catholic faith and to become Christian leaders for our school and community. Our 3rd grade core curriculum is supplemented with enrichment programs, including music, P.E., computer lab, and Gateway to Art.
