STEAM Program
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)

What is STEAM?

STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Similar to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), STEAM incorporates Art.  Art is involved through product design, communicating through language arts, and setting the context for engineering challenges through social studies.

A STEAM program equips students with necessary 21st century skills for the workplace.  Students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as increase their creativity, and improve communication and collaboration abilities.

St. Jerome's STEAM Program

Students at St. Jerome School not only engage in learning aligned with common core standards, but they also are taught a K-8th grade STEAM curriculum.  This occurs in every classroom and on Fridays, St. Jerome School offers a STEAM elective.  This elective enables students that are interested in STEAM to further explore their creativity through STEAM challenges.

St. Jerome's STEAM Program is built upon a framework that is motivating, engaging, and is inspired by the real world.  The teaching methodology is inquiry-based and student-centered.  Students apply meaningful and vital math and science content to learning activities while engaging in the engineering design process.  The engineering design process consists of the following steps:

1. ASK…What is the problem that I need to solve?
2. IMAGINE…What are some ways to solve the problem?
3. PLAN…What are we going to do to solve the problem?
4. CREATE…Let’s build it!
5. TEST…How well does it work?
6. IMPROVE…What can we do to make it better?

While engaging in the engineering design process, students work as a team and strengthen their communication skills.  St. Jerome students have the freedom to think critically and creatively while inventing.  Students are given the opportunity to fail and try again in a safe environment.
