Third Grade and Fourth Grade
Discussed the historical work of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges plus even Michael Jackson... :). In Social Studies there is a section of the book dedicated to the contributions of African Americans. The Third grade class has written about these contributions. A formal Report will be written on it to continue the learning in March for when WASC comes to visit. Fourth grade red multiple short biographies of influential Black Americans. Students were provided a selection of books for independent reading. The Literature project study using an African folktale that is usually done in February was postponed until WASC week. Look for it next month. Fifth Grade Fifth Grade did a black history research report. They had to research an influential African American and write a biography about that person. They also had to tell why that person is an important/influential figure in their life.

Middle School
Students watched speeches from Dr. King on YouTube: The Stanford speech and I Have a Dream. Student also learned over the life of free slaves on the eastern seaboard during the early years of the United States. It's all a buildup to March when students learn about the industrial revolution and the Southern slavery. Students also chose historical figures who were influential African Americans as subjects for their Social Studies projects. For Black History Month, 8th grade was assigned an African-American Hero who contributed significant accomplishments in various careers. Students researched their Hero, created a collage poster, wrote an essay on the challenges, accomplishments & biographical background for their hero and did classroom presentations. These projects will be displayed in the hallway during our WASC visit, please stop by to see them.
Music
Upper grades students received lessons about jazz, where they explored the definition of jazz, talked about improvisation and listened to jazz tunes from Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.
